Lake Superior Beaches in Minnesota

Of course, the most well-known of our thousands of lakes is one of our nation's Great Lakes, Lake Superior. Spreading out over 31,700 square miles and holding over 10 percent of the planet's fresh water. Lake Superior offers everything you ever expected from a great lake and so much more. Located just a few hours (2-4) north of Minneapolis, the beaches of Lake Superior are worth at least a day trip to the North Coast!

  • Park Point - Located in Duluth, Park Point beach is part of a long sand dune between Lake Superior and the Duluth Harbor. These sandy beaches are open to the public and are a favorite of bird watchers. There is also a beach house with concessions, a pavilion for picnics, playgrounds and more.
  • Black Beach - Named for the black sand that creeps up against water's edge. Its coloring derives from taconite tailings that were poured into the lake during our iron mining heydays. Located the furthest from Minneapolis, on the North Shore of Lake Superior it is worth a visit!
  • Iona's Beach otherwise known as Pink Beach - This tour of color and fun would not be complete without a visit to Pink Beach. It is also located on Lake Superior's North Shore. The rocky shoreline is actually shards of pink rhyolite that have broken away from the cliffs that bookend the beach. The crystals may feel a little uncomfortable against bare feet. We recommend wearing water shoes will help ensure that your beach day is perfect. Swimming, wildlife watching, and photography are just a few of the acceptable activities you will enjoy at Pink Beach.
  • Brighton Beach - Located in Duluth, MN, Brighton Beach was once a lovely campground. Brighton Beach features a stony shore perfect for paddle boarding, picnicking and a great BBQ with friends. You can also stop and visit the Great Lakes Aquarium while you are up there!

More Great Beaches to Explore in Minnesota!

As we continue to explore the beaches of Minnesota, we want to take a few minutes to venture away from Lake Superior. Let's take a closer look at some of the other 9,999 lakes we are famous for. Many of these beaches are located closer to the twin cities area. How will you be able to decide between these beautiful locations?

  • Tioga Beach - (3 hours north of Minneapolis) Located on Lake Pokegama (from the Bakegamma language, meaning "the water that juts off from another water.") Tioga Beach is a public swimming area popular with swimmers, picnickers, and anglers of all ages. Offering two pavilions, grills, a children's playground. Caution there is no lifeguard on duty. This family beach will be a beautiful addition to your Minnesota adventures.
  • Avon Beach - (1 hour northeast of Minneapolis) Middle Spunk Lake (aren't these names wonderful?) is the sight of our next adventure. Avon Beach is located in the town of Avon. The beach offers picnic tables, restrooms, and close proximity to the Lake Woebegone Trail. This beach is open daily in the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Lake Ann Park and Beach – (30 minutes southwest of Minneapolis) Located in the city of Chanhassen, the beach is part of a 102-acre park with 100% undeveloped shoreline. There are canoe and kayak rentals as well as other watercraft rentals available after March 25th and conclude at the end of the summer season.
