Experience the Spirit of Inclusion: Special Olympics 2026 USA Games in Minnesota

The Twin Cities are preparing to host one of the most inspiring sporting events in the country as the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games come to Minnesota. The games will take place from June 20 to June 26, 2026. This national celebration is expected to bring together more than 3,000 athletes from all 50 states, 1,500 coaches, and 75,000 fans for a week dedicated to the power of inclusion and the unbreakable human spirit.

Known for our “Minnesota Nice” hospitality, Minneapolis is ready to welcome everyone to the Twin Cities. We know that this experience will be a life-changing experience for everyone involved.

The Special Olympics are a Landmark Event for the Twin Cities

Minnesota is no stranger to the global stage of inclusive sports, having previously hosted the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1991. The 2026 USA Games will feature 16 sports, ranging from traditional favorites like Athletics, Swimming, and Basketball, as well as the exciting debut of Cornhole and Pickleball. Most competitions will take place at the University of Minnesota and the National Sports Center in Blaine. This will make the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area the central hub for all the action.

Beyond the Special Olympic games, families can enjoy the Fan Zone, the Law Enforcement Torch Run, and the spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies, in honor of the great achievements of the extraordinary athletes.

Transportation Options for the Special Olympic Games in Minnesota

In the Twin Cities, the easiest way to travel is on the METRO system. The Metro System offers two light rail lines around the city. There are also rapid bus lines with fast and frequent stops all day. Fares for adults are just $2.00 per day. Check out the Trip Planner option to help you navigate our public transportation system HERE.

  • The Blue Line: connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul as well as the Mall of America.
  • The Green Line: runs between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul with stops at the University of Minnesota.

Minnesota is also a very bike-friendly area with many bike lanes in the streets. In addition to biking, the Twin Cities have plenty of ride share options with Uber or Lyft.
